There is a lot of pic's out there of DIY 401 plinths, but then there isn't really much information as to why certain materials are used. Can anybody please explain to me:

Garrard 401 with Bubinga This CLD plinth is made from 18mm Birch plywood with a 22mm MDF base. The plinth is wrapped with fine cuts of Bubinga with a satin poly-wax finish. The removable armboard is also Bubinga and has a dual arm configuration that can fit either a 9" or 12" tonearm. There is a second tonearm position for a Rega mount-type arm.

Bought a 401 recently one owner from new for a very cheap price of £300,very nice condition:^Been following TonyL's thread on Pink Fish with interest.Thought I'd try a cheap skeletal plinth first.Bought anoak worktop from Ikea for £80 to make the top and bottom plinths (the wood is crap) lots of filled cracks etc.

401 Plinths. I know slate is probably the preferred choice sonically, but I just love the look of the 401 in a real wood plinth. This, to my eyes, is the most beautiful wooden plinth I've ever seen for a 401 - the fact that the deck is recessed into the plinth just makes it look so much classier, IMO, and is the sort of thing I will be aiming.

On its release in 1965 the Garrard 401 promised a number of design changes that would improve on the performance of the Garrard 301 that had been around since 1954, unfortunately the quality control on the 401 was not up to scratch and what should have been a sonic step forward was not fully exploited….until now.
